On Thursday (today!) we video chatted with Zespol Szkol nr 4 in Poland. Our 7th grade class joined us for part of the Skype Chat. The students in Poland asked us some questions about our school day, weather, animals and our Peace Animations.
The students were 13 and 14 years old and liked talking with us and practicing their English. They spoke very well!
We learned that Poland is located in the middle of Europe. They border on the Baltic Sea and their country has all different landforms, including mountains, deserts, waterfalls, hills, lakes, islands and more. We saw some pictures of Poland and it is a very beautiful country! They have 4 seasons like us. It is autumn there now. The temperature was 10 degrees Celsius today, that is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. They get a lot of snow in the winter. Sometimes they get so much that it buries their cars. They do not however get Snow Days. They were envious that we get the day off when we get too much snow.
They have many of the same animals as we do. In addition they also have a lot of White Storks. They said one in four White Storks in the world is probably from Poland.
Poland’s time is ahead of us. It was 10 am for us, but it was already 4 pm for them! They stayed after school just to talk to us!
They taught us how to say hello and goodbye in Polish.
“Czesc” is hello and “do widzenia” is Goodbye.
They were pleased when we surprised them by saying
“Bardzo mi milo” which means “Nice to Meet you!”
We also know that “Tak” is Yes! and “Nie” is No!
We had a great time talking and learning with the students in Poland today!

Hello Mrs. Harju’s class; I am a university student in the teaching program at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada. I am impressed with your site. I love your use of technology, especially the Skype call to Poland. What a great way to expand the borders of your classroom.
[...] Mrs. Harju’s Classroom Blog – “Our classroom blog is a peek into our classroom for parents, grandparents, friends, and other teachers and classrooms around the world,” writes Patti Harju. (Patti teaches a 2nd grade class in East Grand Rapids, Michigan and has been blogging since March of 2007). “The students are very willing and excited participants in the blogging process. Blog posts are written in a variety of ways. Some posts are teacher written, highlighting and event or project in the classroom. Some posts are a class collaboration. For student written blog posts, the students work in small groups, and together they decide what to write. They write in a special notebook with a cool marker, and this is then typed on the class blog. In the beginning, I do the typing, and as the students are more capable, they do the typing. Images and videos are included when possible or appropriate.” Recommended posts: “Learning About South America” and “Poland Skype Chat.” [...]
